Description

The former school, dated 1841, is now used as a store. It was built for Edward, Archbishop of York. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone and has a purple slate roof. It has an E-shaped plan, with the right limb projecting to the rear. The structure is single storey and consists of four bays, featuring a projecting gabled central porch and outer bays. The porch has a step up to a board door beneath a stone lintel. Each of the flanking and outer bays contains a two-light, 16-pane side-sliding sash window with a stone lintel and a projecting sill. The right-hand gable has a slit vent, while the left-hand gable features a square plaque in a raised stone surround commemorating the Archbishop, who died in 1847 and rebuilt the school. Above this plaque is a small rectangular opening with a bell. The eaves overhang on wooden brackets. There is a brick stack on the right side and another to the rear left. An outshut to the right is not of special interest. The rear has two windows similar to those at the front in the central bays, while the left bay, which has a 20th-century window, projects under a hipped roof. The right return also has two windows matching those at the front.
