Description

Sneaton Hall Hotel is a small country house, now operating as a hotel, dating from the late 18th century. It was altered and extended in the early and late 19th centuries, with an early 19th-century addition commissioned for James Wilson. The original part of the house is pebble-dashed with tooled sandstone quoins, while the later extensions are constructed in rusticated sandstone with tooled quoins. All have slate roofs. The original design featured a central entrance hall plan, but this has been expanded with extensions to the sides and rear. The main front of the house is two storeys high with a three-window arrangement, accompanied by two-storey extensions to the right and a recessed section to the left. The central entrance is accessed through a Doric porch featuring pilasters, an overhanging cornice, a fluted frieze, and bulbous finials, and incorporates a six-panel door. The windows are 12-pane sashes with stone sills. The gables are coped and feature shaped kneelers finished with ball and pedestal finials, along with end stacks. The left return of the house includes a tall, round-headed staircase window. The right extension has a coped gable with a finial on a kneeler and an end stack, while the left extension has a hipped roof and is included on the listing for group value. A lean-to extension to the far right, and the Sneaton Hall Cottages at the left rear, are not considered to be of special architectural or historical interest.
