Description

The Church of Our Lady and St Edward is a Roman Catholic church built in 1896 by Sir Arthur Blomfield for M Edouard Souberbielle. It is constructed from squared rough-faced Purbeck stone with Chilmark dressings and features a plain tile roof. The church has a plan consisting of a nave and chancel combined, with a separate east Lady Chapel dedicated to the endower's wife, a north-west porch and tower, and a west lean-to attached to the nave, all designed in the Decorated style.

The east projection has a gabled roof with a pointed east door and wrought-iron gates, above which is a pointed three-light east window. The sides of the church have buttresses between the bays, with the east bay featuring paired two-light pointed windows that have cinquefoils in their heads. A buttress on the west side is topped with a statue under a canopy, while the other bays contain three pointed lancets. A moulded sill string runs along the building.

The porch has a pointed door and buttresses that are topped with gablets at each end of the gable. Behind the gable, there is an octagonal turret with a canopied niche or pointed lancet, followed by a bell stage that has pointed louvred openings on each face and a shingled spire. To the west, there is a pointed arch with five stepped lancets beneath it, and below that is the lean-to with lancets and a parapet, featuring walls at each end of the roof and buttresses.

Inside, the chancel has Purbeck shafts supporting the rear arches, and the reredos includes a fresco by Paul Natter.
