Description
Three flights of steps and a gateway located southeast of Luttrell's Tower, dating from around 1930 and possibly designed by Clough Williams-Ellis. The structure features stone steps and paving that connect the flights, with brick piers supporting wrought iron gates. These steps traverse the low cliff directly below Luttrell's Tower. The middle flight consists of perron stairs that flank a large arch leading to the entrance of the passageway to the cellar of Luttrell's Tower. A parapet wall runs along the inside of the stairs, rising over the archway to hold a stone armorial shield. The top flight has five steps, with lions depicted on the side walls, while the lowest flight is plain and made of concrete. At the bottom, there are four brick piers topped with ball finials, positioned between central double gates and side pedestrian gates, all featuring ornate wrought iron work.
