Description

Flight of thirteen sandstone steps with rubble parapets and slab-coping. At the bottom front face of the L parapet are the incised date 1702 and the letters: 'IE RI (?) IO (?) RLL WARDEN(S)'. The copings to the right-hand parapet are slightly moulded; those to the L have 3 metal spikes. At the top of the flight is a plain stone stile flanked by small square piers (heightened in rendered brick) with fragmentary moulded finials, that to the L broken off and that to the R reconstructed. Adjoining this to the NW is a short section of contemporary curved revetment wall with sandstone capping. This slopes down into the grassed bank to the L; rectangular outlet to R. Adjoining the steps to the R a similar, contemporary stretch of wall continues in an arc to the SE for some 50m before terminating in a stone stile, probably also contemporary. This has 3 steps up to it and small C19 square sandstone piers with pyramidal capping stones.
