Description

Luttrell's Tower, now known as Eaglehurst Tower, is a folly tower built around 1780 for Temple Simon Luttrell. It was altered in the 19th century and restored around 1978. The tower is constructed of yellow brick with stucco and some stone dressings, topped with lead roofs. It stands near the edge of a low cliff and features three unequal storeys. The rectangular tower sits on a cellar and has a six-storey circular stair turret at one end, which rises higher than the rest of the structure. The second storey is short, while the third storey is tall, with the upper three storeys of the turret consisting of two equal storeys and a short top storey.

At the opposite end of the turret, there is a three-storey bowed bay, which has niches on the first two floors. The niches on the second floor are adorned with urns, while the third floor features roundels, one of which still has a relief. On the landward side, there is a Gothick timber oriel on the third floor. The windows are pointed and have a mild Gothick style, with sash windows on all sides except for casements on the seaward side. The turret has pointed lancets and round windows at the top stage, while the landward and seaward sides are blank. The tower is decorated with string courses and a cornice below a crenellated parapet, with the turret having a similar design.

Inside, each floor contains a good-sized room with unusual moulded plaster decoration. The top room features a frieze of Gothick traceried baskets alternating with shells. All rooms have fireplaces brought in from around 1700, including the cellar, which has a passageway leading to the beach. This property is now owned by the Landmark Trust.
