Description
The Master Builder's House is a house that has been converted into a hotel. It dates from the mid-18th century and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries, including a large hotel addition. The building is two stories with an attic and features three bays. There is a parallel range behind and a 20th-century L-shaped wing with a projecting end, along with further single-storey additions.
The front of the house has a central six-panel door set in a projecting doorcase with pilasters and a broken pediment. This door is flanked by 19th-century 16-pane exposed-frame sash windows under segmental gauged arches. An arch breaks the raised band on the first floor, where there are also 16-pane sashes with exposed frames. The building has a moulded timber eaves cornice and two-light hip-roofed dormers. There is an end stack, which is shared with other buildings on the left-hand side.
Inside, the ground floor has a single roof over the front. Externally, on the end, there is a 16-storey, weatherboarded canted bay between the piles. The ground floor features 12-pane sashes on each face. This room used to be the study of Henry Adams, who was the shipyard owner from 1749 to 1790.
