Description
Penn Cottage is a cottage dating from the early to mid 17th century, with alterations from the 18th century and additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame construction with brick and weatherboard cladding on the additions, topped by a hipped thatched roof and a central brick ridge stack. The building is single storey with an attic and has a two-unit plan typical of the 17th century, with a central lobby entry and a stair located at the rear of the stack.
The front wall, originally timber framed, has been rebuilt in 11th century brick laid in Flemish bond and is now painted white. The central entrance doorway is flanked by a three-light casement window on either side, all set beneath brick cambered arch heads. Above each ground floor window, there is a two-light casement dormer. The windows feature leaded casement lights in wooden frames, and the entrance has a boarded door.
The thatched roof is extended over an open porch supported by two timber posts. At the rear, there is a 19th century lean-to extension with a catslide roof. Additionally, there is a 19th century extension on the left side of the front with a hipped roof, and a 20th century extension on the right side with a flat roof.
