Description

A row of five houses dated circa 1760, built for Gilpin Sawrey, and forming part of a planned town square – an unusual feature in a Cumbrian village. The houses are constructed of roughcast stone with slate roofs. They are three storeys high, with basements to the west, and consist of six bays, with No. 5 being of two bays. The roofs are lower to Nos. 1 and 2 due to the slope of the ground. The windows are generally sashed, though No. 1 has casement windows. No. 1 also has a small-paned basement window and a glazed entrance door. No. 2 has a small-paned basement window and a six-panel door, with a casement window on the second floor. No. 3 has a basement window with a pivoted casement. Nos. 4 and 5 lack basements and have paired ground floor sashes with single glazing bars, alongside second-floor casements. These houses have entrances with six-panel doors. The second bay of No. 5 features a segmental arched through passage and sashed windows with glazing bars. The rear of the building retains tall stair windows with small-paned glazing.
