Description
The monument located north-east of Muncaster Castle is an eyecatcher, likely built in the mid-18th century. It is constructed from rough-dressed granite boulders with quoins and features a battered design with banding between its floors. The structure has a pyramidal roof made of stone blocks and consists of three stages, with an octagonal shape and a height of approximately 65 feet. It is designed to look medieval from a distance, although it lacks intricate detailing. The entrance has a pointed head with splayed jambs, and there are oculi on each side between the lower stages that illuminate the ground floor. The first floor is probably accessed externally through an opening on the north-west face, while the other faces display blind Latin crosses. The second floor features small windows in rusticated surrounds on each face. Inside, there are spiral, domical vaults on the ground and first floors, along with niches of various sizes on the ground-floor walls. The monument is said to commemorate the location where shepherds discovered Henry VI wandering the Fells after the battle of Towton in 1461.
