Description
The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a parish church dating from the 16th century, with later additions and alterations. It was restored and a north transept was added in 1874 by Anthony Salvin. The building is constructed from coursed, squared rubble with quoins and features an embattled parapet supported by cavetto eaves. The roofs are covered with graduated slate, featuring stone ridges and copings.
The church has a four-bay nave, a three-bay chancel, and a north transept. The west end of the nave includes a gabled bellcote, while the east end has a sanctus bell. The chancel is topped with a corbie-stepped gable. There is a gabled south nave porch with a pointed outer door and a semicircular-headed inner door, as well as a blocked 'devil door' on the north side. The chancel has a blocked south door, and the north door features an inscription around its head that reads: "ITA VIVE QUOD SUMMUM NEC METUES DIEM NEC OPTES."
The church has multi-light stone-mullioned windows. Inside, there is a king-post roof and pointed arches leading to the chancel and north chapel. An old sandstone font, believed to be from the 17th century, is located in the corner at the west end and is square in plan. There is also an octagonal stone font on marble columns at the west end, dated 1860, which has a donor's inscription on the rim and coats-of-arms on the sides. The interior features numerous memorials to the Pennington family and fine late 19th-century stained glass in the chancel, some of which was created by Morris & Co. to designs by Holiday.
