Description
The Church of St John is a parish church with foundations likely dating back to the 13th century, featuring later additions and alterations. It is constructed of wet-dashed rubble and has a graduated slate roof with stone copings. A gabled bellcote was added at the west end in 1796. The church has a single-cell plan and includes a gabled south porch, which was rebuilt in 1825 and contains internal stone benches and a plank inner door. The windows are multi-light, stone-mullioned, and date from various periods. The interior was flagged, pewed, and ceiled in 1807. An octagonal wooden pulpit, featuring carved decoration and an inscription, reads: "THE GIFT OF ABRAHAM CHAMBERS GENT. VAE MIHI SI NON VERUM PRAEDICO S R 1630" (with a possible error in the date). At the west end, there is a monolithic stone font, likely medieval, which is square in plan and rests on a chamfered plinth with stop-chamfered corners. Above the door, there is a panel displaying the coat-of-arms of George III, dated 1778.
