Description
The Muncaster War Memorial is located by the roadside on the main road between Barrow-in-Furness and Gosforth, near Seascale, at the junction leading to the coastal village of Ravenglass. It features a war cross made of Lakeland granite, with a lozenge-shaped shaft that tapers into a rectangular plinth. The plinth carries the inscription "TO THE MEN OF MUNCASTER WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR." Below the inscription is a laurel wreath carved in relief, which is the only example of this feature among memorials designed by Lutyens of this type. The memorial stands on a base of three broad, square, shallow steps. It is set within a shallow, stone-walled recess, where the names of the fallen from both world wars are inscribed on blocks that are inset into the wall.
