Description

Home Cottage and the adjoining barn are a farmhouse that was formerly the Home Farm for Lorton Hall and is now a private house with former barns. Although the date of 1666 noted in previous descriptions is no longer evident, there are alterations dated 1738 above the rear doorway. The cottage features painted roughcast walls on projecting plinth stones, topped with a graduated greenslate roof and a central painted roughcast chimney stack, although the gable chimney projection stack has been removed. The barn is constructed of painted slate rubble and has been raised in height, also covered by a graduated greenslate roof. The building is two storeys high with four bays, and the barn forms an overall L-shape with a right angle. There is a 20th-century door in a cement surround beneath a 20th-century gabled hood. The cottage has sash windows with glazing bars, three of which are in original chamfered surrounds, while the others have been enlarged with painted stone surrounds. The barn features a 20th-century plank garage door, a left 20th-century door, and a right plank door in an original plain slate opening. Inside, there is an inglenook with a heck partition and an early 18th-century moulded stone fireplace. All rooms have beamed ceilings, and the staircase retains some of its 18th-century stone steps.
