Description
The inner terrace wall, ramps, and steps located north of Lowther Castle were constructed between 1806 and 1810 by Sir Robert Smirke for the 1st Earl of Lonsdale. Made of calciferous sandstone ashlar, the terrace wall serves as a low retaining wall for the first stage of the garden terrace directly in front of the castle. It features central steps leading to the main entrance, flanked by long carriage ramps, all aligned parallel to the facade of the house. The wall has 45-degree angles and includes low circular turrets at the corners. The right wall extends up to the facade of the castle, while the left wall connects to the stable wall. This structure is recognized for its group value with Lowther Castle.
