Description

The stable block east of Lowther Castle is a Grade II* listed building constructed between 1806 and 1809 by Sir Robert Smirke for the 1st Earl of Lonsdale. It is made of calciferous sandstone ashlar and features string courses and battlemented parapets. The roofs are made of graduated greenslate and are partly hipped. The buildings form three sides of a courtyard.

The rear coach house is two stories high and has seven bays, with ground-floor segmental arches beneath two-light stone-mullioned windows that have hoodmoulds. A battlemented parapet rises in the center, featuring a clock face and the Lowther arms. To the right, there is a single-storey, four-bay quadrant link, while to the left is a similar two-storey link with a central segmental arch and sash windows under hoodmoulds.

The left side features a two-storey, nine-bay stable with seven recessed bays and flanking rectangular battlemented turrets. It also has a central segmental arch and sash windows under hoodmoulds, with rounded-arched windows in the turrets. The right domestic/stable range mirrors the left but includes angle turrets on projecting bays, with the right turret forming part of the return wall of the castle facade.

Historical records from the Household Accounts of the Earl of Lonsdale in the County Record Office, Carlisle, indicate a payment made on June 30, 1806, to William Bayles & Co for the removal of earth in preparation for the foundations of the new stables and coach houses. The stable block is graded for its group value with Lowther Castle.
