Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church dated 1832, designed by Sir Robert Smirke, who also designed the nearby Lowther Castle. The church incorporates features from the medieval church that previously stood on this site. It is constructed of snecked calciferous sandstone ashlar, with an eaves cornice and raised quoins set on a chamfered plinth. The roof is made of graduated green slate, featuring coped gables and cross finials.

The building has a square south-west tower and a four-bay nave/chancel, which includes a north transept and a south aisle. The tower features a round-arched studded south door, round-headed windows, and round-headed twin bell openings. The nave has west studded doors in a pointed arch beneath a three-light window, with round-headed windows on each side and a three-light east window.

Inside, there is a four-bay Gothic-arched arcade, a rear gallery, a panelled pulpit, and 19th-century panelled oak pews, with the ends carved with the Lowther arms. There are various 19th-century white marble wall plaques. The transept serves as the burial chapel for the Sandford family of Askham Hall, containing 17th and 18th-century wall plaques for family members. The font, with a stem and bowl, is dated 1661, and there are 19th-century creed and pater boards.
