Description
Brathay Hall is a late 18th-century house that now serves as a training centre. It is built of ashlar stone with plastered returns and a rear, featuring hipped slate roofs. The main section of the building has three storeys and five bays, with one-storey wings on either side that include an attic and three bays. There is a band above the ground floor and a sill band at the first floor, along with a top cornice. The wings also have a top cornice and a blocking course.
The windows are sashed, featuring glazing bars and margin lights. The wing on the right has French windows beside a blind window, while both wings have small attic lights beneath the cornice. The entrance features a glazed doorcase with a four-fielded-panel door, and a bowed porch supported by four unfluted Doric columns with leaf capitals, a frieze, cornice, and blocking course.
On the right side of the building, there are three bays, with the central bay recessed and the flanking bays featuring tripartite windows with segmental tympana. The left side has later extensions that are of no special interest. At the rear, there is a central bowed bay with a tripartite stair window and projecting wings. The wings have gable end stacks, while the central section has lateral stacks.
Inside, there is an open-well flying stair with stick balusters, along with some remaining cornices and fireplaces. The Founder's room features plaster panelling, a dado rail, and a cornice decorated with vases and swags. The fireplace in this room has columns and a cast iron grate, with angle pilasters at the window.
