Description
Rock Cottage is a 17th-century building located in Clappersgate, Rydal and Loughrigg. It features a white-washed and roughcast exterior over stone rubble, topped with an old slate roof. The cottage has two low storeys, each with a glazed and panelled door alongside a window. Above, there is a 16-paned sash window set in half-dormers, with a dripstone over the ground floor. A modern timber porch has been added to Rock Cottage. The left side of Wayside, which faces the road, has a gable end with a central door, a small gable hood, and small-paned sash windows. The later cottages attached to the north end of Rock Cottage are not included in this description. Rock Cottage is part of a group that includes the Croft Hotel, Croft Lodge, Nos 1 to 5 (consecutive) in Croft Courtyard, a cobbled courtyard with a mounting block and pump, the Gatehouse, and Howsley Cottage.
