Description

Rose Cottage is a cottage dating from the 17th century, with some remodelling in the 19th century. It is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, and features a double Roman clay tile roof with a plain north gable and an abutment to the south. The building has two storeys and two bays, with 2-light stall-pane casement windows that have dragged stone cills and deep stone lintels on the ground floor. The central entrance has a plain boarded door, and there is a lean-to against the north gable that includes a 20th-century part-glazed door, along with a larger 20th-century extension at the rear.

The interior has not been seen, but it is reported to contain chamfered beams with step and run-out stops, an open hearth with an oven, a fireplace with square-cut bead-moulded surrounds, traces of a stone newel staircase, and collar trusses. The west elevation is a good example of 19th-century style using locally quarried stone, while the interior retains 17th-century features. The cottage is divided from an adjoining house, which is not of special interest, in the later 19th century.

Additionally, 4 metres west of the cottage is a boundary wall made of Keinton stone flags or planks, measuring 7 metres and 4 metres in length with a gate between. This wall is typical of many such walls that were formerly found in the village.
