Description
Howsley Cottage is a picturesque cottage ornée dating from the 18th century. The exterior is cream roughcast over a stone rubble core, with a slate roof and three chimneys. It has two storeys and features four 12-paned sash windows on the upper floor and five below. A twin-glazed door is set beneath a small verandah/porch supported by delicate wooden piers, Tudor arches and iron cresting. All windows have awning cases.
The left-hand (western) portion of the cottage presents a lower, partly gabled and partly castellated profile. This section contains a glazed and panelled door above a blind, traceried round fanlight, both sheltered by a round-headed porch with a Chinese-patterned front fascia on slender wooden Tuscan columns. A garage has been inserted within a large round arch, once part of a coach-house.
The cottage forms part of a group with the Croft Hotel, Croft Lodge, Numbers 1 to 5 (consec), the Croft Courtyard (including a cobbled courtyard with a mounting block and pump), the Gatehouse, Wayside and Rock Cottage.
