Description
Croft Lodge, comprising Nos 1 to 5 Croft Courtyard, is a cobbled courtyard dating from the 18th century. Originally the stable yard of the Croft Hotel, it now functions as private dwellings of two or three storeys. The courtyard is formed by two ranges of stone rubble buildings with slate roofs, set at an obtuse angle to one another. The south range features a small wooden Gothic aedile on the first floor, above which are arrow slits. This range also has four 12-paned sash windows, modern openings below, and a clock face within a gabled central portion, set within an elaborately carved wooden surround. The north range is similar in design, with a gabled centre, and four openings on the upper floor; these include two 12-paned windows, a studded loft door, and one blocked opening. One older sash window is present on the ground floor, with the remaining ground-floor openings filled with modern windows and garage doors. A mounting block stands beside an older sash window. An iron pump and stone trough are positioned in the angle between the two ranges. Clustered chimneys are characteristic features.
