Description

Burnt Wood Hall is a large house, now used as offices, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, with additions from the later 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of ashlar sandstone with a stone slate roof. The building has an irregular plan, but a symmetrical façade facing the entrance. It is two storeys high, with a window arrangement of three windows on the first floor, one window, and then three windows again. The front has a plinth and three stone steps leading to a part-glazed door set within an open stone porch with two Doric columns, matching imposts, a plain frieze, and a pediment. Wide, flanking canted bays, each with three sash windows featuring glazing bars in plain projecting surrounds, are linked by a sill band. Similar windows are found on the first floor, also with projecting sills, with another sash window above the porch. A wooden eaves cornice runs along the top. The roof is hipped with stone copings. A tall stack to the left eaves has a moulded string and cornice, and a similar stack is located on the right ridge. The right return includes four bays with windows matching the front, followed by a short, late 19th-century projecting wing with a two-storey canted bay window surmounted by a pierced balustrade, and to the right, an open loggia with four Doric columns and an anta, finished with a modillioned cornice. Inside, the entrance hall contains an off-centre staircase with an elaborate cast-iron balustrade. There are reeded wooden architraves and pine panelling throughout. Contemporary fireplaces are found in the ground-floor rooms to the right. Decorative plaster features are present, including an ornate coved ceiling with a central roof light in a first-floor rear room.
