Description
Brierley Hall is a house that has been converted into local council offices. It was built in the mid-19th century with later additions. The hall was constructed for Reverend John Hoyland and features tooled-ashlar sandstone and a stone slate roof. The main structure is a twin-roofed, double-pile range with a lower matching extension on the left and a 20th-century brick addition on the right, which is not of special interest.
At the center rear of the main range, there is a low two-storey wing. The left rear corner has been infilled by a 20th-century addition, also not of special interest. The main range has three storeys and five bays. The ground and first floors have sashes with glazing bars, all featuring square-faced surrounds and projecting sills, with a sill band at the ground floor.
A flat-roofed porch has been added to the first two bays, designed as a half octagon, which includes 20th-century double doors and an overlight in a square-faced ashlar surround, flanked by sashes and topped with a cornice. The third bay likely contains the original door position. The central first-floor window is highlighted by an architrave, frieze, and cornice, while the shorter second-floor windows have 6-pane sashes. A modillioned cornice is now obscured by wood guttering. There are truncated brick stacks at the eaves of each return, and the roof is hipped.
The left wing is two storeys high with three bays, matching the main style, and features a hipped roof with a tall stack positioned at the rear. It is connected to the main range by a short bay that includes a round-headed stair window with glazing bars.
