Description

Kirkby Common Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in the early to mid 18th century, which has been altered and enlarged over time. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone and features a slate roof with brick chimneys. The building has a transitional double-depth two-unit plan that includes an outshut. The front elevation is three storeys high, while the rear is low with two storeys under a catslide roof.

The facade is symmetrical with two bays, and the ground floor is rendered. A central doorway has a raised surround with long-and-short jambstones and a large fluted keystone. There are two windows on each floor, all with raised surrounds. The windows on the ground and first floors were likely originally cross-windows but have been replaced with two-light casements. The second-floor windows have double-chamfered surrounds and were probably originally mullioned but are now two-light horizontal-sliding sashes. The gables have copings with shaped kneelers and gable chimneys.

The right-hand return wall is rendered and features an inserted window near the front corner. At the rear, a former doorway has been altered to a window, with two small windows to the left and an inserted doorway between them, likely replacing a former similar window. There is a square window above, and a vertical joint to the left indicates the extension of the original outshut.

Inside, the housebody in the first bay has large rectangular fireplaces, and a central staircase rises from the front to the rear in one flight on each level. The staircase has splat balusters from the first landing, but it is now partitioned from the housebody, and the splat balusters of the first flight have been removed. This interior resembles that of Stockingate Farmhouse.
