Description

The Atkinson Monument is a headstone located approximately 10.5 meters south of St Mary's Church in Broughton-in-Furness. It dates from 1805 and is made of ashlar stone. The monument features a triangular-headed design with a fluted fan at the top. The inscription commemorates Jane, the wife of John Atkinson and sister of William Ashburner Esquire of Bombay in the East Indies, who died in 1805, as well as her son Thomas, who died in 1775 at the age of 4. There is also a later inscription for her husband, who died in 1821.
