Description

The Emperor's Lodges, gate piers, walls, and railings at the south entrance to Lowther Castle were built in 1895 for the Earl of Lonsdale. They serve as an entrance to the Emperor's Drive leading to Lowther Castle. The structures are made of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and feature a graduated greenslate roof.

These two-storey, two-bay square lodges have a plinth, quoins, and a battlemented parapet, with off-centre battlemented square towers that project to the rear. The lodges have corniced chimneys at the outer tower corners and at the centre front. The stone-mullioned windows include two-light windows in the outer bays and five-light windows in the full-height canted inner bays, all with original diamond-leaded glazing.

The projecting battlemented porches on the inner returns hold doors with four-centred heads and hoodmoulds, which are also present on the windows, including the round-headed windows in the lower stages of the towers. There are one-storey rear dog-kennel wings.

The gate piers are chamfered stone squares with coved cornices and baronets' coronet finials. Coped dwarf walls support cast iron railings featuring cusped arcaded panels and leafy finials. The lodges were built to commemorate the visit of the German Emperor, whose arms and a commemorative plaque are displayed on the entrance front of the East Lodge.
