Description
A late 17th-century house with a late 18th-century addition, situated beside the A592 near Watermillock. The house is constructed of roughcast stone rubble, with a slate roof. The north-east elevation is two storeys with an attic, and features three bays, with projecting end bays under asymmetrical gables that have wide eaves supported by curved brackets and moulded bargeboards. The central bay has three-light, single-chamfered mullioned windows flanking the entrance, and a fire window to the right, with a continuous dripcourse raised above the entrances. The first floor has a four-light window with a single light to the right. The wings have sash windows with glazing bars. Each gable contains two bull's-eye windows. The central entrance has roll-moulded jambs and lintel with a sunk ogee enclosing the letters "I & ED", flanked by escutcheons bearing the numbers “16” and “86”. The six-panel door has three round-headed upper panels and the date 1686 to the top, with an original drop handle and knocker, and strap hinges. An entrance to the inner return of the left wing has a four-paned door with a wooden and drop handle, and a corresponding six-fielded-panel door to the right wing. There are large cross-axial stacks and a similar stack to the left wing. The rear of the house has a five-bay, later range under a hipped roof, with sash windows featuring single glazing bars and a central Venetian stair window, plus an entrance to the fourth bay, and return lateral stacks. The interior includes a hall with a segmental arched fireplace, a later corbelled fireplace, cupboards with butterfly hinges, a segmental-headed entrance to the left, an end panelled partition, cased beams, and cornices. A dining room, originally two rooms, has panelling in the front portion and a bolection-moulded fireplace. The first floor retains some original doors and closets, and a room with a modillioned cornice and a bolection-moulded fireplace. A stone spiral stair rises to the attic. The later rear range contains an Imperial stair with two lower flights, and an Adam-style plaster ceiling with a tympanum over the entrance to the front range. A portion of the left wing is integrated into Magnolia Cottage, as is a later range of no particular architectural interest.
