Description

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a parish church that was originally a chapel of St Bees, with its dedication uncertain. It is believed to date from the 15th century, with a north aisle added in 1830, along with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of pebble-dashed rubble and features a graduated slate roof with an outshut to the north aisle, stone copings, a bellcote at the west end, and an apex cross at the east. It is a single-storey structure with a single cell and a north aisle. The entrance has a plank door with a window to the left and two 2-light windows to the right.

Inside, the north arcade consists of elliptical arches supported by monolithic stone columns that have stop-chamfered edges and octagonal caps. The main body of the church features similar plaster transverse arches that spring from corbels adorned with winged heads. Decorative plaster bosses can be found in each bay, with some displaying foliate designs, an open bible, the star of David, and a dove in a sunburst over the altar. A royal coat-of-arms of George III, made of plaster, is located on the west wall, indicating that the plasterwork likely dates from the early 19th century. The richly carved panelling behind the altar is from the 17th century and was brought from York Minster after a fire there in 1829; the pulpit to the left features similar carving. There are 19th-century texts on the walls on either side of the east window, along with remnants of 18th-century texts on the south wall.
