Description

The former smithy and cottage at Long Rigg Farm, likely built in the early to mid 19th century and altered around 1900, is now a store and an unoccupied residence. The structure is made of random granite rubble with quoins and features red sandstone lintels. It has a slate roof with brick chimneys. The building has a two-unit plan, with the ground floor built back-to-earth. It stands two storeys high and has two windows. There are square-headed doorways slightly offset to the left of center; the left doorway has a board door, while the right has a 20th-century stable door. To the left, there is a square window with fixed 8+8 pane glazing, and the right window, along with both first-floor windows, has been enlarged to a vertical rectangular shape, all featuring fixed 16-pane glazing except for the ground floor window, which has a 20th-century top-hung casement opening in the upper half. The building has gable chimneys. Inside the former smithy, there is a forge made of large granite blocks, complete with large leather bellows suspended in a wooden frame with a levered handle and chain that are still in working order. This site is historically linked to a former bobbin mill located just to the north, which has since been converted into a dwelling. The building forms part of a group with the model farm buildings at Long Rigg Farm, located approximately 20 meters to the south.
