Description

The barn and shippon at the north end of the farmyard at Long Rigg Farm is a bank barn type structure, built in 1903 for Lord Ree of Gatehouse. It is constructed from granite rubble with quoins, red sandstone dressings, and has a graduated slate roof. The building has a rectangular five-bay plan and is two storeys high, with an elevated entrance at the rear leading to the barn.

The yard-facing side features five segmental-headed windows at ground level, each with chamfered sills and granite voussoirs, and three-pane glazing above wooden ventilators. There is a segmental-headed loading doorway above the central window and two slit breathers on either side. The gables are coped with moulded kneelers and apex finials. Both gable walls have pentice roofs supported by wooden brackets, which protect two shippon doorways located near the corners. The left gable also has a central feeding passage doorway, and both gables display datestones inscribed "JHR/AD/1903."

At the rear, an earthen ramp leads up to a central gabled porch that features a wagon doorway sheltered by oversailing verges and an additional pentice canopy. Inside, the shippon contains a complete set of original double stalls for 32 cows arranged in two rows facing a central feeding passage, equipped with piped drinking bowls and granite feeding boxes. The barn includes a trap door in the center of the floor, positioned over the feeding passage in the shippon, and features four kingpost roof trusses. This building is a fine example of its type and, along with the stable block, pigsties, multi-functional range, manure shed, and boundary wall, forms a complete model farm.
