Description

The Gate House, now part of the Outward Bound School, is a large house built in 1896, as indicated by a panel above the door, with some rainwater heads dated 1901. It was designed by A. Huddart of Whitehaven for James H. Rea, whose initials appear on the dated panel. The building features coursed, squared rubble with sandstone details and has graduated slate roofs with stone ridges, copings, and kneelers, along with projecting stone chimneys. The plan is asymmetrical, with the main house comprising two storeys, a full-height porch, and a canted bay, alongside a three-storey tower that is a later addition. Notable architectural features include sandstone quoins, string-courses, a blocking course at the roof of the house, and a castellated parapet on the tower. The outer porch has a four-centred opening, and the windows are scattered, set within chamfered stone-mullioned surrounds.
