Description

Long Rigg Farmhouse is a farmhouse and cottage that has been combined into one dwelling, likely built in the early to mid 19th century and altered over time. The exterior features roughcast and slobbered rubble with a Cumberland slate roof, arranged over three levels. The main range has a double depth design with a small extension on the left and a set-back service wing on the right.

The main range consists of two and three storeys, with attics and a window arrangement of three to one. The two-storey section has openings that are symmetrically arranged but offset to the left of centre. This includes a doorway with a vertically panelled door and a three-pane overlight, two six-pane unhorned sashed windows on the ground floor, and three above. The three-storey section on the right features a smaller six-pane horned sashed window on the ground floor, another on the first floor, and a low oblong eight-pane window under the eaves, all with raised plain surrounds. There are gable chimneys and a ridge chimney.

To the left, there is a small lofted extension with external steps leading to a raised doorway in the front wall. The gable wall has a ground floor doorway, a low segmental-headed three-light window to the left, and a square twelve-pane window above. The right gable of the main range has two square twenty-pane attic windows.

At the right rear corner, there is a service wing with two low storeys, featuring a doorway and a casement window on the ground floor, and a twelve-pane sash window above. This is followed by a single-storey extension with a doorway and a four-pane sashed window. The irregular rear includes a back door and one six-pane sashed window on each floor.

The farmhouse forms a group with the model farm buildings attached to the north end, contributing to its group value.
