Description
The barn and gin-gang located to the south-east of Hall Santon farmhouse is a large ramp barn that includes byres and a dovecote. The barn was built in 1847, as indicated by the initials I. & G.E. on the lintel of the central byre door, while the gin-gang is likely constructed slightly later. The structure is made of snecked rubble with rough-dressed sandstone details, featuring chamfered eaves. It has graduated slate roofs, with the gin-gang covered in part with Welsh slate. The barn is 2½ storeys tall and consists of five bays, with a full-height wing attached to the rear at the north end. The tall gin-gang, which has a semicircular plan, projects from the north side of the wing.
On the west elevation, there are three plank doors at ground level, with the central and left-hand doors flanked by windows. Above these, two loft doors are present, along with twelve dovecote holes arranged in a 3 by 4 pattern. Four vent-slits under the eaves mimic medieval loop-lights, and trefoil owl-holes are found in the gables. A ramp entrance is located at the rear of the barn. The gin-gang features a tall entrance at the junction with the wing, but the openings around its circumference are blocked.
