Description
Irton Hall's main house is a large building that was later used as a school and was empty during the survey in July 1984. The house was enlarged in 1874 by Grayson for J L Burns Lindow. It is constructed of coursed, squared rubble with quoins on a chamfered plinth, featuring an embattled parapet supported by moulded eaves and gargoyles at the corners. The roof is hipped and covered with graduated slate, complemented by stone chimneys. The building has two storeys and an entrance front with three bays, arranged in a 2:1 configuration. The entrance features an offset plank door with decorative ironwork, set within a full-height porch. The first floor has mullioned windows, which are transomed. The garden front is long and varied. The house is listed because it is an integral part of Irton Hall, while 20th-century additions are not considered of interest.
