Description
The Lowther Mausoleum, built in 1857 for William, the second Earl of Lonsdale, is located south-west of the Church of St Michael. It is constructed from calciferous sandstone ashlar with polished Shap granite panels. The mausoleum features a rectangular three-bay chamber over a basement. The front includes steps leading down to double panelled doors set in a pointed arch. Above these doors is a similar doorway with glazed panel doors, which displays the Lowther family arms. The structure is topped with a battlemented shaped parapet and has octagonal angle turrets, each adorned with numerous carved heads and topped by griffins. The return walls feature recesses with pointed granite panels beneath a shaped parapet, which includes three blank shields. At the rear, steps lead up to a flagged walkway, and there is a four-light pointed-arched window. Inside, there is a marble seated figure of the second Earl, created by E.B. Stephens in 1863, nine years before the Earl's death.
