Description

South Haddon Cottage is an estate cottage dating from around 1830, which was derelict at the time of survey in July 1985. The cottage is constructed from random rubble local stone and features a slate roof with overhanging eaves and decorative bargeboards on the return gable ends. It has a two-cell plan, is two storeys high, and consists of two bays. The windows have 4-centred arch heads and are fitted with 2-light iron casements that have divided tracery heads and cast iron Perpendicular style tracery.

On the right-hand corner, there is a single-storey gabled porch with a slate roof, accessed from the right return through an ashlar 4-centred arch head opening, leading to a square-headed inner doorway with a plank door. The interior was not seen during the survey.

Adjoining the cottage to the east is an agricultural building with a loft over the byre, which may pre-date the cottage but has been altered since. This building is also made of random rubble local stone and has a slate roof. It features a square-headed central loft opening below the eaves and wooden lintels over two large openings in the outer bays, both supported by central circular stone piers. The overall composition is unusual, and its evolution is unclear. This property was part of the Pixton Park estate and may have served as a gamekeeper's cottage.
