Description
Dunster County Primary School Main School Building was constructed in 1871, designed by architect J P St Aubyn, and has undergone later alterations and additions. The building is made of snecked red rubble sandstone, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings. It has tiled roofs with two ridge chimneys, gables that have projecting purlins, moulded bargeboards, and footstones to the plates. The east gable includes a small belfry located below the apex of the gable. This large single-storey building has a roughly 'Z' shaped plan, with a configuration of 2:3:2 bays on the long sides (east, south, and east again). The windows include casements, stepped and transomed lancet triplets with cusped heads and labels on the gables, and 2 and 3-light windows with Caernarvon arches on the side walls. The entrance is located in a catslide extension at the southwest angle. Note that the modern hall building and classrooms are not included in this listing.
