Description
The Priory Church of St George in Dunster is a predominantly 15th century building, with evidence of work from the 12th and 13th centuries. It was restored between 1875 and 1877 by G.E. Street. The church features a monastic choir from the 13th century, established when Reginald de Mohun founded a Benedictine Priory linked to Bath Abbey.
Constructed from red sandstone with slate roofs, the church has a cruciform plan that includes a central tower and north and south transepts. The four-stage embattled tower, built in 1443, is supported by diagonal buttresses and includes a stair turret and single bell-chamber windows. The western half of the church shows traces of Norman work, while the rest is primarily in the Perpendicular style. Notable features include an embattled south porch and aisle, along with three-light windows that have panel tracery. Inside, there is a fine late 15th century carved oak rood screen with 14 unequal openings and an elaborately carved canopy.
The church also houses several monuments, including a stone female effigy with a canopy, believed to be a member of the Everard family; the recumbent figures of Sir Hugh Luttrell and his wife from the 15th century; an incised slab featuring Lady Elizabeth Luttrell from the 15th century; and an altar tomb with two pairs of recumbent figures, also belonging to the Luttrell family.
