Description
The Old Schoolhouse is a school room and teacher's house, dating to 1819, that has been converted into a private dwelling. It was designed by Richard Carver for Sir John Trevelyan of Nettlecombe Court. The building is constructed of roughcast over random rubble, with crow-stepped gable ends, concrete tiles, and brick stacks. The east end features a four-centred arched window with Gothic tracery, set within a recessed surround in a gabled end. A single-storey, five-bay squared and coursed rubble verandah with a hipped slate roof runs along this end, with segmental-headed openings. The centre bay of the verandah is slightly larger, and the end bay on the right and its return have been blocked to create a small room. A four-centred arched plank door with a side light is centrally positioned, with a 20th-century window within an arched recess to the left. The right return has five bays of mixed fenestration, while the left return, facing the road, features three arched windows with Gothic tracery. A lean-to addition has a square window inserted. The west end has a similar crow-stepped gable, a single-storey verandah, and a gable end window that was concealed by scaffolding during a survey in October 1983.
