Description

Ye Old Cottage is a detached house with gate piers located in Barbrook, dating from the 17th century, although the northern front facing the stream was rebuilt in the 19th century. The building is constructed of rendered rubble, some of which is painted, along with slate hanging, and features a slate roof. It likely originally had a two-room cross-passage plan with end stacks, but now presents a symmetrical entrance front with a lateral stack in a rear outshut.

The cottage is two storeys high and has a three-window range. It features two-light small-pane casements and a central plank door beneath a gabled porch. The right gable is slate-hung and includes a four-pane sash window. The roof slopes down towards the road above a curved corner, and there is a large slate-hung lateral stack on the rear wall, which also has a pointed quadrant window with radial bars. The left gable has a fixed casement with four vertical bars and lapped glazing on the first floor, along with a large four-pane sash window on the ground floor.

At the entrance to the southeast of the cottage, there are two gate piers made of tall rubble plinths topped with late medieval finials, which are likely reused from a former chapel at South Furzehill Farmhouse and are similar to those at North Furzehill Farmhouse. The interior has not been inspected.
