Description
Sawmills Cottage, formerly a sawmill with attached accommodation, dates from the late 18th or early 19th century. The building is a detached, long gabled range divided into two parts, built along and across a steep hillside. The upper range, which was the former mill, is three storeys high with a basement and has four windows. It features a small square recessed light at eaves level, above which are three two-light casements and a four-pane sash window. The first floor has four two-light casements, and the ground floor has three single lights and a two-light casement. To the right of the ground floor windows is a four-panel door within deep reveals, and further along is a wide plank door set in reveals, leading directly to the narrow road via four stone steps. Gable stacks are present, and the west end is slate-hung. The lower range, originally the cottage for the mill, is two storeys high with a basement and has two windows, all casements with horizontal bars, consisting of a three- and two-light above a two-light window. A brick gable stack is positioned on the right side. The interior contains some light-framed partitions, a wide-plank 19th-century door, and a steep ladder stair leading to the top floor. The roof has rough collar trusses.
