Description

Gisperdown Farmhouse, including the adjoining barn and stables to the northeast and shippen to the south, is a farmhouse that dates from around the 17th century or earlier, with stable and barn additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed of stone rubble and has a slurried slate roof with gabled ends. The stables and barn feature a corrugated iron roof with gabled ends. Originally, the farmhouse likely had a three-room layout with a cross or through passage. The lower room, which may have originally been the shippen, has been shortened and largely rebuilt as a service room, while the stables and barn extension were added to the higher end. A shippen has been added at right angles to the front of the lower end.

The house is two storeys high and now has a symmetrical three-bay facade with a central projection that includes a blocked first-floor window and a 19th-century gabled stone porch. The windows are 19th and 20th-century two-light casements. At the rear, there is a projecting rectangular stair turret at the lower end of the original hall, along with end chimney stacks. The hipped slate-roofed shippen, which has a loft above, projects at right angles to the dairy at the lower end. The stables were added at the higher end, with a barn extension from the 18th century further uphill, which includes a later implement shed at the front.

Inside the house, the 19th-century entrance is located at the upper end of the hall and features a partitioned lobby. The original hall room has chamfered ceiling beams and an open fireplace at the lower end, complete with a chamfered timber lintel that has scroll stops. There is a newel staircase to the side of the stack at the back. The roof has not been inspected. Gisperdown Farmhouse is situated on original land at the edge of Dartmoor and represents an interestingly evolved house that possibly began as a longhouse.
