Description

The former London Inn is a public house located at No. 11 West Street in Ashburton. It was built in the early 18th century and underwent remodeling and refronting in the mid-19th century. The building features solid rendered walls and a slated roof, with rendered chimneys. It is double-fronted and likely double-depth, with a long rear wing to the right. The structure stands three storeys tall and has two widely spaced windows, with a slight projection on the left side of the frontage.

The main entrance consists of a four-panelled door, where the two lower panels are flush, flanked by fluted pilasters with foliated capitals. To the right, there is a second doorway that has been converted into a window, which is also flanked by panelled pilaster-strips. A prominent moulded cornice runs above the ground storey, supported by large consoles at each end and flanking the doorways. Above the right-hand doorway, the cornice develops into a wide segmental pediment. The three ground storey windows and all upper storey windows have two-paned sashes in moulded frames. The right side wall features similar sashes without frames, most of which have bracketed sills and vermiculated keystones. The keystone of the ground storey window nearest the front is moulded with the inscription 'HILLS LONDON HOTEL'.

Inside, the ground floor has been entirely altered in the late 20th century. However, early 18th-century features from around the 1720s remain on the upper floors, including part of a closed string stair with heavy turned balusters, panelled doors in moulded architraves, one pedimented door, and a pair of doors set under a scrolled broken pediment with a central pineapple finial. Additional details include moulded cornicing, a main chamber with fielded panelling, fluted pilasters framing a bolection-moulded overmantle above the fireplace, box cornicing, and a shell alcove with shelves for a china cupboard.
