Description
No. 4 West Street is a house with a shop, dating from the early to mid 19th century. It is likely a remodelling of a house from the 17th century or earlier. The front is rendered, probably over timber framing, and is lined to imitate masonry. The roof is slated, and the building has three storeys with two windows across the front. On the left side of the ground floor, there is a mid-19th century shop front featuring a display window divided by enriched iron columns, with a doorway flanked by pilasters and an entablature above. The other windows, including one on the right side of the ground floor, have two-paned sashes. Although the interior has not been inspected, there is a very large, irregular pointed stone arch in the rear wall of the shop that rises from the floor; this arch likely relates to the River Ashburn, which appears to run beneath the house.
