Description

The Moorlands Hotel, situated on the site of a former cloth-making mill, dates to the mid-19th century. It is constructed of plastered granite rubble, with granite or brick stacks featuring plastered brick chimney shafts, and a slate roof. The building has a rambling, F-shaped plan, with the main block set back from the street and a projecting entrance block. A crosswing extends from the north-western end, retaining a short parallel section at its end. The design incorporates axial and gable-end stacks to heat the various rooms, with most rooms located on the upper floors, and service rooms on the ground floor, in basements, and rear outshots. The building is situated on a hillslope, with the left, uphill end being two storeys high, most of the building three storeys, and the right, downhill end incorporating basements.

The main front has a three-by-four window arrangement, with the entrance block positioned centrally. Most windows are horned 12-pane sashes. Lower windows have ornate stucco architraves featuring foliate enrichment on the moulded entablature. Upper windows have low segmental heads with a stucco keystone shaped as a human mask, flanked by radiating bands of Vitruvian enrichment. The left section is symmetrical, culminating in a nine-panel door with a fanlight above. The right section is also essentially symmetrical, divided into bays by panelled pilasters. The wider outer bays here contain tall round-headed sashes with Y-tracery glazing bars, with enriched stucco architraves. The first-floor windows of the central bay have enriched pedimented heads, and there is a series of stucco roundels at first-floor level. The gable end of the entrance block features a six-panel door with a fanlight, with a heavy projecting moulding above, articulated as a porch, and a stucco laurel wreath above the door. The courtyard side of the crosswing has a three-by-two window front in a similar style. The interior remains uninspected.

Cast iron spear-headed forecourt railings, set into granite ashlar coping, extend from the front corner of the crosswing south-eastwards, enclosing the forecourt. The railings are attached to square, monolithic gate posts of granite ashlar, with rounded tops. The railings have group value.
