Description

Claremont Guest House, originally a house, dates from around 1850. It's constructed of plastered granite stone rubble, with granite stacks and plastered brick chimney shafts, and has a slate roof. The house was built following a double-depth plan, with rooms running along the street and facing south-west. A central entrance hall leads to a rear staircase. Each side of the hall contains front and back rooms, each heated by gable-end stacks. A secondary single-room block extends at right angles to the rear of the right-hand rear room.

The two-storey front features a symmetrical facade with three windows, each with an 8-pane sash and a flat stucco architrave with a pedimented head. The central doorway has a 2-panel door and an overlight, set within a flat stucco architrave, topped with a moulded hood supported by fluted corbels. The roof has projecting eaves and dormers to the rear. The interior has not been inspected. A narrow strip of land across the front is enclosed by cast iron railings from the 19th century, with square-panelled gate posts set in granite ashlar coping.
