Description
Buckland Monachorum War Memorial is a granite memorial cross located on The Green in Crapstone. The memorial features a five-stepped octagonal base topped by a square plinth with blind buttresses at the corners. A tapering cross shaft rises from the hooded top of the plinth, supporting a Latin cross with budded cross arms.
Lead lettering inscriptions are present on the steps and plinth. The main dedicatory inscription reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD & IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF BUCKLAND PARISH WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND WE FOR ENGLAND DIED." A dedication for the Second World War is inscribed around the upper steps of the base, stating: "IN GLORY EVERLASTING MAKE THEM TO BE NUMBERED WITH THE SAINTS 1939 – 1945." Names of the fallen are recorded on the other faces of the plinth and base steps.
Granite posts surrounding the edge of the green support a chain that encloses the memorial.
