Description
Frithelstock War Memorial is a granite memorial cross located on the village green, opposite the Grade I-listed Church of St Mary and St Gregory and the scheduled and Grade I-listed Ruins of Priory Church (Frithelstock Priory). The memorial features a three-stepped square base topped with a rough-hewn granite plinth and a plain Latin cross.
It is dedicated to local men who served during the First and Second World Wars, with painted and leaded inscriptions on the plinth and the first step of the base. The main dedicatory inscription reads "IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (7 NAMES)" and on the base "WORLD WAR/ 1939 - 1945/ (1 NAME)." Lists of names of those who served in the First World War and returned are displayed on either side of the plinth under the heading "ROLL OF HONOUR."
In front of the memorial, five granite steps ascend from the road, accompanied by rubble stone retaining walls that support metal handrails. These additional features are not considered of special interest.
