Description
Horwood Barton is a farmhouse dating from the early 18th century, with mid-19th century extensions to the right of the front porch. The building features colourwashed render over coursed slatestone rubble, with gabled and hipped slate roofs and rendered brick end and internal stacks. It has a double-depth plan.
The front elevation displays a two-storey, two-window range at the centre, featuring a 20th-century porch with a mid-19th century six-panelled door. To the left, there are 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. A mid-19th century two-storey bay projects to the right of the porch and has two-light casements. The right end of the front has another bay with mid to late 19th century horned 12-pane sashes. To the left, there is a wing that projects at right angles, featuring two late 19th to 20th century two-light casements with glazing bars facing the front. The right side wall has a three-window range with mid to late 19th century horned 12-pane sashes. There is a 19th century dairy outshut to the rear left.
Inside, the farmhouse has early 18th century dog-leg stairs with a landing at the rear of the central hall, featuring turned balusters set on a closed string. The dairy at the rear has a slate floor and shelves. The office to the left of the porch contains mid-18th century panelling and mid-19th century cupboards. The room to the rear right features early 18th century bolection-moulded panelling and doors, an early 18th century ribbed plaster ceiling with cherubs and shells in the concave corners, and a central quatrefoil with a lion set in a cartouche surrounded by palm fronds. The first floor has 18th century panelled doors and shutters, along with early 18th century bolection-moulded fireplaces in the rear left and rear right rooms. The left side has an 18th century five-bay collar-truss roof with trenched purlins.
